A Mosaic of Embodied Knowledge:
Transmitting Zellij Tile-Making in the Workshop and the City

The starting point of this body of architectural research was the clay Zellij mosaic tile, the product of a Moroccan craft tradition. The project investigates the complex forms of sociality around the production of the tile. Through the investigation, the question emerged of how artisanal craft traditions, which have been transmitted through embodied knowledge and oral instruction, can be preserved into the 21st century, following a disruption of ancient apprenticeship models of learning.  The proposal responds to the question by intervening in four sites throughout the city, which each facilitate transmission of embodied knowledge in different ways. This project was a response to a MA Year 1 brief in the ADS2 studio of the Royal College of Art MA Architecture programme.
